How do Politicians work? 

When you meet with the person your meeting with making sure to keep on track and say what you want to say don’t get off topic and try your best to explain the problem in a simple way many politicians will use you as an advantage for them and change your words and use you for their advantage.

How to Lobby?

    Call or email and schedule an appointment around two weeks prior to having the most time with the person you're going to meet with, do your research on the person your meeting with and be in early. Have prepared what you're going to say and some examples. Be confident and don’t be nervous and talk from the heart. Show what the issue is something you really care about and want to change.  Talk about the issue and how it affects you in your area and the people around you. Share some of your personal stories, give out materials. Ask for their support on the issue and then plan the next steps at the end of the meeting thank them for taking the time to meet you and talking with you.

Lobbying/ Persuading

Email and schedule an appointment or if you get no reply, make sure to call or a few weeks prior to have the most time with the person your going to meet with and to also have time to do your research on the person your meeting with and to also know exactly what you want to talk about. It looks really good if you come in prepared knowing exactly what you want to say and to make sure you get your point across but don’t overload the person with too much information. On the day of the meeting dress formally and look organized. Show up early to the meeting and have prepared what you're going to say and have some examples. Be confident and don’t be nervous and talk from the heart. Show that the issue is something you really care about and want to change. Talk about the issue and how it affects you in your area and the people around you and some of the things that can be done to change the problem and if you have shared some of your personal stories to show the person that it has affected you, give out materials paper, pictures etc. Ask for their support on the issue and then plan the next steps at the end of the meeting thank them for taking the time to meet you and talking with you.

C- Contact your local politicians by calling, emailing and writing letters.

H- Have your intentions and goals set out clearly for them.

A-  Ask questions about their role and what they can do for you.

N- Never give up, even if there are some obstacles.

G- Gain and give them support through social media.

E- Every person contacted is another opportunity for your issue to gain exposure.

 

Y- You have to be patient as contacting politicians may be a long process.

O- Offer to travel to meet them where they are based.

U- Understand they are busy people.

T- Trust that they are passionate and want to hear about your issue.

H- Have your goals and intentions set out clearly for them.
